See the Treasure, Buy the Field

I had the great privilege last month to attend a weekend retreat with the Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship groups from the University of Regina and the University of Saskatoon. God has used this community profoundly in my life in the past few months, and the message of the retreat is something that has significantly impacted my life and my view of community and ministry. The theme of our weekend was "See the Treasure, Buy the Field" and it comes from Matthew 13:44-46.
The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.
This small portion of scripture speaks profoundly.
Our speaker challenged us a lot on the ideas presented here. "When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field." "When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it." This man was willing to give up everything! What does this mean for us? What are things that God is asking us to give up? Our priorities? Our time? Our resources? Our money? Certain relationships? Your pride? Personal space? Comfort? The most important question to ask is "What do I need to give up in order that I may gain Christ?" Are there things in my life that are holding me back from experiencing the fullness of who Christ is?
Think about this story. Why did these people sell everything they had?

It is because they knew the reward would be far greater than the cost.

The kingdom of God is relevant. It is current. It is woven into everything.
Are we carried away with the kingdom? Are we seeking it with joy? Do we realize the worth it holds? Are we willing to give up everything that holds us back from more of Christ?

All it costs is everything.

We sell what we have that we may buy Christ. (This doesn't necessarily mean selling all your earthly possessions, but more giving up things in the way of you and God and things in the way of you forming relationships with other people.) Yes Christ gives Himself freely to us, but the abundant life He offers comes at a cost.

The only ones who EVER regret selling are the ones who stop buying.
If you are giving up things in order to gain Christ and gain the Kingdom, you will not regret it. If you are giving up things but not pursuing Christ, you will not find the joy in it.

Some questions to think about:
What do you have?
What does God want you to sell? What holds the centre of your attention?

An amazing thing that our speaker shared was this.

There is more of the Kingdom than you have experienced.

This is amazing. I have been blown away by God's greatness again and again lately and been so filled by kingdom living. There are times my heart is so full and satisfied that I cannot ask or imagine anything greater. And there is more.

I hope you are encouraged by this. The reward of the kingdom is so great. Invest in it. The more you search for it and the more you pursue it, the more you will find. The reward of it is worth the cost of following. It is worth selling.

See the treasure.
Sell everything.
Buy the field.

Jesus says in Matthew 16:24-26:
"If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?"
Paul speaks on this same concept in Philippians 3:7-8 when he says:
"But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ."
Paul understood the joy of selling to buy. "I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ."
God desires relationship with us and there are great and wonderful things in store for those who are willing to follow with full abandon.

See the treasure.
Sell everything.
Buy the field.

Not done yet.

It's been a long time since I've written, but I have a full heart and lots to share!
Yesterday I sat down with a good friend of mine and God gave us a song. Hopefully sometime I can show a video of it, but for now, I leave you the lyrics:

Not Done Yet
November 22, 2014
Carina and Jessamy

Verse 1
Tears keep falling and my feet are failing fast
This journey's getting heavy and I don't think I can last
Everything around me is crumbling to the ground
And I can't help but feeling like I'm about to drown

PreChorus 1
Then I hear Your still small voice
Calling out to me

Chorus 1
You're still my daughter and I haven't loved you more
You're still my child and I'll carry you through the storms
The road may be steep and the path uncertain
but darling we're not done yet
We're not done yet

Verse 2
Life is overwhelming and I don't know where to go
My steps are shaking but I'm clinging onto hope
My trips and falls make me unworthy of Your love
All that I have is gone, but Jesus, You're enough

PreChorus 2
I can hear Your still small voice
Whisper to my soul

Chorus 1
You're still my daughter and I haven't loved you more
You're still my child and I'll carry you through the storms
The road may be steep and the path uncertain
but darling we're not done yet
We're not done yet

Chorus 2
We're not done yet
We're not done yet
I'm not finished with your heart
Let me guide you
I will show you
My grace fixes broken hearts
We're not done yet
We're not done yet
I'm not finished with your heart
When your world is falling down
I'll hold you up
I'll hold you up

Bridge
When I said "It's finished"
I meant between you and sin
And when I gave my last breath,
I knew that I'd still win
(x2)

Chorus 2
We're not done yet
We're not done yet
I'm not finished with your heart
Let me guide you
I will show you
My grace fixes broken hearts
We're not done yet
We're not done yet
I'm not finished with your heart
When your world is falling down
I'll hold you up
I'll hold you up

Chorus 1
You're still my daughter and I haven't loved you more
You're still my child and I'll carry you through the storms
The road may be steep and the path uncertain
but darling we're not done yet
We're not done yet

Ending

We're not done yet (x3)

Come to Me
Come to Me
Enjoy my presence
It's where you're free
(x4+)

The road may be steep and the path uncertain
but darling we're not done yet
We're not done yet...

The Refining of a Heart

The craftsman leans over, studying this precious metal.
Each time He puts it through fire, and each time, more dross comes to the top, to be skimmed off. Removed.
Again, the metal is put through the fire, to be refined. To made pure.
Sometimes the dross cannot be skimmed off,
sometimes it must be hammered and rolled. A painful and long process.
But it all serves a purpose, to refine the metal, and make it pure.

"Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer." Proverbs 25:4

The process of refining a metal has a wonderful parallel to the Christian life.
We come before the Lord with hearts of stone. Hearts that are filthy and in dire need of cleansing.
As it says in Jeremiah 17:9, "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure, Who can understand it?".

That verse in Proverbs 25 is so wonderful... take away the dross... and there shall come forth a vessel!
I love to compare myself as a vessel. Yes, I'm a leaking, and broken vessel, nothing special. But I have the most skilled craftsman, and in my weakness, He is glorified!

I have been recently reading through the book of Jeremiah, and in chapter 6 I read a verse that really hit me.

"They are all hardened rebels, going about to slander. They are bronze and iron; they all act corruptly. The bellows blow fiercely to burn away the lead with fire, but the refining goes on in vain..." Jeremiah 6:28-29

The Lord refines our hearts because He loves us. We are commanded to be holy (1 Peter 1:16), which is something impossible for us to attain on our own. How could such a broken and foolish person as myself be holy? It's certainly something I could never accomplish on my own. Only Christ can do that, and His life through me.

"but the refining goes on in vain.."

My heart's cry to the Lord the past few days has been just that.. that the refining of my heart would not be in vain, but would fulfill the Lord's purpose! That when the dross is removed from my heart, no matter how painful it is, that I shall come out of it as an even more refined vessel, that the Lord can use for His purpose. And that I will continue to allow Him to refine and build this vessel. A vessel for His service. How do we make this refining worth it? Allow Him to change you! Be willing to obey! Has He asked you to do something that you're refusing? As He revealed to you things you are unwilling to change? He wants to change you, so let Him do it! Don't fight it.

Today, right now,  consider YOUR heart. Where is your heart before the Lord? How is your heart? Be willing to check it honestly before Him. I desperately want this refining to be of value, and not something that the Lord looks at as worthless. So as I check my heart, I still see a lot of garbage, and a lot of pride, and a lot of hurt and a  lot of stubbornness. God is continuing to scrape and break my heart, each and everyday. It is painful, and I wish I didn't have to go through this process, but it only serves to make me more and more like Christ, the one I love and follow.

"Create in me a pure heart, O God." Psalms 51:10

Undistacted Devotion

As I have been asking God for a lot of input and wisdom lately (I should be doing this all the time, but lately it has been happening more often), I have come to a realization.

I ask God a lot of questions, and then I tune out His answers.

Oh of course not purposely.
I just came to a realization though..
I ask God a question, and then instead of listening for His reply, I go and turn my music on, check my facebook, watch my tv show, text all my friends...

No wonder I can't hear Him.

Even as I write this, I am fighting a strong urge to check my facebook, look at things on pinterest, listen to music. It's become such an impulse that it's hard to just lay it aside. The Lord has been speaking to me that it's time to take a technology fast. I'm still praying about exactly how it will look. I have already begun to cut out apps on my phone. One thing I have realized is that I need to spend more time in silence/prayer. How can I hear God if all I hear is noise? I have a 40 minute drive to work everyday, which means my total vehicle time is about 1.5 hours. It's easy to just turn on the tunes and not think about anything else, and especially avoid prayer time. However, how can I expect to hear Him when He speaks, if I'm not willing to listen? God is ALWAYS speaking to us, we just aren't listening. I am excited to cut all of this technology out, although I know it will be a challenge, because I know that the Lord will use this time to really speak to my heart. I read an article the other day by Phil Wickham, and one thing that he said really stuck out to me. For those of you who don't know, Phil Wickham is a worship singer and has recorded several albums. In the middle of his last tour, they found an irregularity on his vocal chords, and the only way to heal it is absolute silence.
This is what Phil says, "So I've been quiet now since Saturday, and you can imagine how the last 5 days have pretty much been just a wild series of nods, shakes, and gestures...It's also been a lot of listening. I'm starting to feel like I haven't been listening enough because I feel like I'm hearing a lot more lately. The Lord has been speaking to me profoundly. I feel so at peace. So loved. Moments of fear are quenched with a thought of the cross. Moments of anxiety vanish in the whispers of His grace. And I am thankful for it."

It is beyond me how God manages to speak to me when I indulge in so many distractions. About a month ago, I made a list of all the things distracting me from my relationship with God, and He is slowly cutting those things out. I didn't ask Him to do this. I didn't want Him to do this. I just wanted it to be "good" without giving anything up. It is PAINFUL, but the end result will be so great. I'm thankful that God doesn't allow me to stay the same, but continues to refine and renew my heart. Dear friends, I challenge you to consider your own heart today. Are there things in the way of your relationship with God? Things that are causing you to be distracted and that take away your time with Him? Write them down, I encourage you. Be brave. And then ask the Lord to show you how these things can become less and how He can become greater. Sacrifice is always hard, but to sacrifice for Him is worth it. Good Friday is one week from today, and what is our sacrifice compared to all that He has given us? In John 15:12 - 14, Jesus gives us these words: "This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command you."
He gave His life for you. He gave His life so that you could KNOW GOD and so that you could be free from the power that sin once held over you. Do not let yourself be held captive to that which distracts you, but as a free child of God pursue Christ. "Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross." Hebrews 12:1-2a

"This I say for your own benefit; not to put a restraint upon you, but to promote what is appropriate and to secure undistracted devotion to the Lord." 1 Corinthians 7:35

Pursued.

As far as I know, it's every girl's dream. Literally, even before we can tie our shoes and count to 10, it is somehow communicated to us what the point of life is (or what it seems to be, anyways) - eventually finding that prince, the perfect one, the one who will do anything for you, fighting dragons and going through dangerous, scary forests, just for his princess. And obviously, you need to find him sooner rather than later. Of course, in our culture you wait at LEAST until elementary school to start on this journey. Yeah, does anyone else have memories of everyone dating having a special friend that they could always talk to in class and maybe hold hands with at a hockey game in Grade 6? HA. It is crazy if you think about it. Everywhere you look the message is being spewed at you like a fire hydrant. "YOU NEED SOMEONE". Okay, since when was this a need? Why does a girl in grade 6 need a boyfriend? Oh wait, she doesn't. So okay, jump forward a few years.. Grade 10, 11, 12... If you're in a relationship you're automatically cooler or something. Everyone knows you only find that special someone if you're good looking and not awkward. So basically, if you're not popular and you suck at sports (hello, Jessamy), then you don't have a boyfriend at high school. Okay, whatever. Even though the subject of boys is basically all girls study in high school, it's okay if you don't have one yet. Especially if you go to a small school. Cue the classic excuse: "I live in a small town. There are no good guys here." Which could be true (sorry boys who I went to high school with), and also since you live in a small town, you know everyone's life secrets and every embarrassing thing they've ever done, and every other girl they've dated is probably in your graduating class, and you also remember them in kindergarten when they were awkward and probably peed their pants in class. Not exactly a big catch haha. Also, this means they remember when you were embarrassing and awkward (oh wait, I still am) and that one time in Grade 3 when you threw up on the school bus. WHY AM I SO CUTE. Sorry to everyone who had to be there for that.
OKAY anyways, I'm getting off topic, but this is just how my mind is working right now. Gotta let it all flowwwww. (Just a fun fact, I actually did date a guy in high school, and it was great. However, thankfully God knows what is best for us and that relationship ended, and I am quite happy without it. Also, the guy wasn't from my town.)
Okay, so anyways, by the time the end of high school rolls around, everyone still "wants someone", but there is a good chance it's a little less romantic than it was when you were 6. Now you just want someone who you can call and text and hold hands with and kiss and..
right?
So by this point, you've lost the dream. In the fairytales, the girls were pursued. Those guys did anything they could to get their princess. I don't even think our culture understands the meaning of that word when it comes to relationships. What used to be a dream of a man who would chase after you and be willing to sacrifice for you is now thrown away, because it is seemingly impossible to find.
**Disclaimer** I am aware that some people have great relationships, where this isn't an issue, but I'm just kind of getting myself to my main point, and I know I'm making a lot of generalizations, so please don't be all defensive.
Okay, I'm trying to get back on topic.
As a girl, I want to be pursued. I think deep down everyone wants that actually. We all want someone to love us and fight for us, and to make us feel needed and desired. But sometimes we give up that dream. Since we have this deep desire to be loved, we begin looking for it in the wrong places and the wrong ways. Before we know it, our hearts feel empty and unsatisfied. Instead of waiting to be pursued, we ourselves begin a pursuit.
Being out of high school for 3 years has made me realize the truth of this even more. Everyone I talk to "Soooooooooooooooooooooooo, (and girls definitely drag out the word that long) do you have a boyfriend yet?" "Sooooooo when are you getting married?" IT'S AN EXPECTATION. Our world is obsessed with relationships, and it's dumb. Yes, relationships can be fantastic, but all too often they are just a way for people to "feel something" and to try and fill the love void. Not gonna lie, there have been times in my life where I've gone after relationships for the complete wrong reasons, simply because I wanted someone to be with and someone to love me. It's sad now that I think of it, and it wrecked some good friendships too. IT IS OKAY TO BE SINGLE AND IT IS OKAY TO NOT WANT A RELATIONSHIP RIGHT NOW AND IT IS OKAY TO BE CONTENT AND HAPPY WITH YOUR LIFE WITHOUT LOOKING FOR MORE THAN YOU ALREADY HAVE. Sorry for the caps, just some thoughts.
Back to my point.
We are always pursuing things. Always looking, always chasing, never content.

Let me tell you a secret.

Are you listening?

Someone is already pursuing you.

Wait what?

Yes. Have you forgotten your creator, your first love?
I know I'm sometimes guilty of forgetting.
For the past couple months I have been thinking about this wonderful fact that God pursues us. No boyfriend/husband will ever be perfect, but we serve this God who loves us and wants us and will do whatever it takes to get our attention. Sometimes it's a painful process to realize this, but everything He allows is in our best interest, even when we don't understand it. This God that we serve is waiting for us and constantly talking to us. He loves me and understand me better than any man ever could. Next time you feel lonely or unimportant, be comforted and encouraged in the fact that God wants you and He will do whatever it takes to capture your heart. You are beautiful and special and precious to Him. He is pursuing you.. will you let Him in?

Jessamy

"She went after her lovers, but me she forgot. Therefore I am now going to allure her; I will lead her into the desert and speak tenderly to her." Hosea 2:13b-14

get out of the way.

Well it seems spring has finally arrived in Saskatchewan.. or getting here. The snow in our yard is slowly melting, and it's pretty exciting to look outside and see that patch of grass getting bigger and bigger. Wohooo. I love winter, but it is always so wonderful when spring comes, because we all know that after spring comes SUMMER. Anyways, for the past 3 years, and this year being no exception, along with spring comes the big question... "what's next?". And every year at this point, it still seems I am completely clueless. It seems the pressure is just put on full force, ESPECIALLY from my parents. They know what they want for me, and I know have a lot of ideas of what I want for me, and of course they don't seem to line up. And then God.. what does He want for me? Ultimately, it doesn't matter what I want, it doesn't matter what my parents want, it matters what HE wants. Am I willing to go where He leads? Am I willing to follow His leading? Even if it's not my first choice? Even if it's not a choice I would ever consider? Am I willing to surrender my heart and my desires and be filled with His desires and plans for me? I have had to give up some things in the past month that were so important to me, and as I realized what God was asking of me, my prideful heart found itself saying, "Okay, I've given that up, so now there isn't anything left in the way. God, I'm willing to do whatever you want, because suddenly every plan and dream I had is completely shattered." I was ready to go. Ready to follow God all the way. Now today I'm hit with the realization of how stupid that was of me to think that "nothing else was in the way". Me. I'm in the way. As I dream of next year and of the future, I of course want to make wise choices, but I also want to go somewhere where I'll be happy and do something that I WANT and not just do what other people tell me. So I realize, I'm in the way. God takes my dreams and breaks them.. gently and lovingly of course. But they're still broken. So what do I do? I create NEW dreams. And now my desires are completely different from what they were even 2 weeks ago. Now I'm so caught up in what I want. I want to do what HE wants, but I don't know what that is. What happened to the girl who said, "I'll go wherever you lead?" Am I willing to answer that call? As I wonder and stress think about this all day long, I am no where closer to having an answer right now than I was when I woke up this morning.
However, as I was writing to a friend today and sharing with her this struggle I am facing, it hit me.

"You don't need to know right now."

Wow. What freedom I found in hearing those words. There are still 4 months till school starts. Why do I need to have all the answers today? I don't. If I had all the answers, I wouldn't need to rely on God to show me. I have applied for some schools, so why freak out? It will all work out, and if I don't know the answer till the end of August, then I don't know till the end of August. Meanwhile I will be going crazy and probably being a little stressed about such a big unknown looming ahead of me, but GOD KNOWS, and I know He is trying to remind me to just trust in Him. I need to listen and just get out of the way for now. My Father will show me when it's time.

Are you getting in the way of God's leading in your life?

"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways." James 1:5-8

Leaking.

Wow, SO MUCH has happened in the past month, where to even start?
We still find ourselves in the season of lent, and as I posted here, I decided to give up netflix for this time, and also to make a deliberate effort to be thankful each day. So I have succeeded in the no netflix, but definitely haven't been writing down something i'm thankful for each day. There have been days I've thought about it, but it just didn't end up how I wanted it to be. In regards to no netflix, that has been good, and I have been more productive at home, but the point is to spend more time with Jesus, which has gone in spurts. It seems hard to reform a habit when it's been absent for so long. One thing I have been thinking about a lot lately is that fact that GOD PURSUES US. I am hoping to write a post about that soon :) I'm definitely not a perfect person.
This is an excerpt from my first ever blog post... one that explains the title of my blog.

"I'm just a girl who loves the Lord, wants to be used by Him, and a girl who realizes how broken and desperate I am without Him. Just a leaking vessel, really. We all know that if a boat is leaking, it is useless. Useless, yet not without potential. Useless, unless someone fixes it and refines it. Then it sails. Sails to places no one could ever guess, on a journey no one could ever plan. So here I am, a leaking vessel, but slowly and surely, the Lord is refining me, purifying me, healing me, and taking me on the journey of a lifetime. Time to sail."

This is still true. I wrote that last August, and so much time has passed since then. Life has happened. There have been victorious along the way and there have been heartbreaks. My vessel is still leaking and broken, but it is through my weaknesses and my cracks that God shines through. I am weak so that He may be glorified through me. I couldn't even hope for such a great God to use MY LIFE, but He does. Wow. He is continuing to restore me and refine me. It's a process that isn't easy. It involves brokenness, but the end result will be so beautiful!
I know I need to be spending more time in the Word and in prayer. I am thankful that it is never too late to restart, and that God doesn't just give up on us, even when we've pretty much given up on Him. What a faithful God we serve.

So anyways... the "Lent Resolutions"...
I had some things I wanted to accomplish during Lent, and lets just say they didn't all get done. Some of them did, but not everything. However, I still have a couple weeks ;)
AND,  APRIL TO DOS. (i realize we're already a week in, but whatever! #dontjudgeme)

  • make time in the Word and prayer a priority
  • mail the gifts I have sitting on my shelf
  • reply to emails.
  • clean out bathroom drawers *shudder*
  • write out my testimony
  • finish the room declutter

I was very blessed to go to a ladies retreat on Saturday in Saskatoon, called Women's Journey of Faith. You can visit their website at http://www.wjof.com/. It was a great day for me to be encouraged in my walk with the Lord, and reminded of the importance of walking in obedience.
Some notes/thoughts:
  • You identity should be found COMPLETELY in Christ.
  • Your loss is only a loss until the right time comes for Jesus to bring a resurrection.
  • You might have a healing in mind, but Jesus has a resurrection!
  • When God sends you on a journey, He will provide for you. Don't worry.
One session that I went to and really loved was called "Launching your Ministry Dream" with Jodi Kozan. I went because I don't KNOW what my ministry dream is yet, I just know that I have one. There are so many things I want to do, and so many people that I want to encourage and bless. It's hard to know where to even start. I loved this session, and here are some things I took away from it.
  • If His leading seems fuzzy... pray, fast, and worship.
  • Start journalling what He shows you. Write down everything, including your dreams.
  • You need to be at such a place with the Lord that you KNOW who you are in Christ. (Knowing who you are in Christ seemed to be a theme that came up at every session btw.)
  • Submission and obedience is important. Don't let pride control you.
  • Start volunteering with people already doing things you're passionate about.
  • Take care of your own heart first. If you're not right with the Lord, how can you lead others?
  • DON'T BE AFRAID TO DREAM.
  • Be willing to receive counsel.
  • ALWAYS go back to the Father.
When we have dreams we tend to talk about them with all our friends first (at least I do). This seminar was a big reminder to me that we need to first talk to the Lord, and actually to spend the MOST time talking to Him.
I loved that Jodi said "Don't be afraid to dream." When I was probably 15 or 16, I remember my friend Lauren told me that it was 11:11 and I should make  a wish. I remember telling her that wishes never came true, so what was the point? Lauren told me that I was a princess (daughter of God), and princesses always wish and always dream. I was at a point in life where I didn't really want to get my hopes up, but she reminded me to dream big. That has stuck with me, and now I'm not afraid to dream and imagine. There are so many things I have envisioned for my future and for ministry, and I think it's important to dream about it! I am so excited for life and everything it holds! So if you're reading this, and feeling discouraged or dry, don't give up. Keep dreaming, but most importantly, spend time with Jesus. Even if it feels empty. Don't give up. He is constantly pursuing you.

Mountains

new lyrics :)
A goal for this year is to make song-writing more of a thing! this may become a problem when i move out and don't have a piano, but hopefully something works out for me to be able to have alone time with a piano fairly often, or become magically amazing at the guitar.. and oh yeah... get a guitar. meh, small details!

here we go

Mountains
Written March 5, 2014

Hope arise
Brightened eyes
Just by a glimpse of Your face
A glimpse of Your grace

Everyday
You stay the same
When I'm unsteady
And I don't know where I stand

Chorus
You move mountains,
You move mountains,
You move mountains,
Surely You can move my sick and broken heart
Unchanging God
Unmoving God
Unfailing God
If You move mountains You can surely move my heart

My heart of stone
Your heart of grace
You can save me
It's in Your name

Jesus take me
Weak as I am
Take my heart
Reform it in Your hands

Chorus

Bridge
Impossible is possible with You
I throw away my lies and hold Your truth
Impossible is possible with You
Jesus take my heart
and make it more like You.

Chorus

So anyways, there it is! I'm working on a couple other songs right now too which is awesome!

Lent and "Lent Resolutions"

I've always wanted to be one of those girls who had that blog that everyone read, that was always updated, and that was the perfect mix of truth, encouragement, and humour. I realize that this is not who I am right now. Maybe one day when I'm a mama, or maybe even when I'm married and have my first house, or maybe even next year when I'm a broke college student balancing money, life, God, relationships, work and school. Or maybe it'll even start next week. Who really knows! Anyways, there are definitely days when I feel the need and desire to write, and so I would like to just being by seizing those moments, and even if no one else ever reads this, someday it will be fun to reread for myself! Today I found myself wanting to write about Lent. I never really knew what lent was until a couple of years ago. I believe I have only "participated" twice and in those times I gave up facebook, and once I gave up chocolate milk. Yes, chocolate milk. My not-so-secret addiction. Anyways, I was fairly aware that lent was coming up right away, but all of a sudden it snuck up on me, and today I was sitting at work and realized it was Ash-Wednesday. Oh man. I really love the idea of Lent. Although it is traditionally a catholic practice, more and more Christians are making lent a part of their lives. For me the idea is similar to fasting. Give something up that wastes too much time, or something that you know isn't good for you. In the time when you would normally be involved in that, make time for God. People give up all sorts of things, but the most common ones I hear of involve any kind of social network, texting, video games, media, etc., and various kinds of food. Today as I was thinking and wondering what I should "give-up" for 40 days, the obvious thing that came to my head was Netflix. I spend days and days hours and hours watching TV shows on Netflix, when I know I should be doing so many other things. Bible reading and time with the Lord have been pushed out of the way, simply because I am lazy. In addition to my relationship with God suffering, I have also been neglecting things I need to do, such as cleaning my room, replying to emails, cleaning my fish Trevor's tank... Sorry Trevor. So I am not giving up movies, and if I happen to be hanging out with a friend or my sister, maybe we'll go find something on netflix. But as for my own personal time, for the next 40 days, I need to focus on what's important, and get stuff done. It's like New Year's Resolutions all over again! I realize some people may read this list and say, "most of those have nothing to do with God, so this is wrong", but for me lent is a personal thing, and yes, I want to make more time for God, but I also need to take care of my mental and physical surroundings, so there are a few things I want to do in the next 40 days. :)
Things to Accomplish:

  • Make time DAILY for the Word and prayer
  • Reply to emails
  • Apply for Scholarships
  • Clean Trevor's Tank O_o
  • Get rid of clothing I don't wear
  • Declutter my room
  • Organize my computer
  • Write final thoughts in my India journal.
So there it is. Lent and Jesus, here we come!
Along with lent, I have decided to each day remember to be thankful for something. This just sort of happened, as last night I posted a facebook status about something I was thankful for, and then again today found myself doing the same. So why not for the next 40 days keep track. I can post them on here, or twitter, or facebook or wherever. And I actually started this the day before lent, just so we all know.

March 4 - Thankful for comfy clothes, good friends, and peppermint tea.
March 5 - Thank you Jesus for the beautiful weather today! Summer will come eventually!

What are you giving up for lent?

Fear Not

But now, this is what the Lord says - He who created you, O Jacob, He who formed you, O Israel:

Fear not.

For I have redeemed you.

I have summoned you by NAME;

YOU ARE MINE.

When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,

you will not be burned;

the flames will not set you ablaze.
For I am the Lord, your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour;
I give Egypt for your ransom,
Cush and Seba in your stead.

Since YOU ARE PRECIOUS
and honoured in my sight
and because I LOVE YOU,

I will give men in exchange for you,
and people in exchange for your life.

DO NOT BE AFRAID,
for I am with you."

Isaiah 43:1-5

This weekend, I was reminded and encouraged to take hold of God's promises and to claim them and pray through them. God desires to bless us and give us life, and His word is full of so many promises that can drastically change our life if we are aware of them, and ask for them. This passage from Isaiah has become my favourite, and I find myself turning to it often, or thinking through verses in my head. Discouragement, anger, sorrow, frustration, anxiety, insecurity, loneliness, fear, depression, worry. These 5 verses seem to take it all away.

Fear not. It is good that God starts by saying this, because this is so often our problem, isn't it? We are afraid. Afraid of the future, afraid of heartbreak, afraid of sin, afraid of being alone, afraid of relationships, afraid of being left out, afraid of making a mistake, afraid of not being enough… afraid, afraid, afraid. Fill in the blank yourself.. When God tells you "Fear not", what is the fear He is trying to calm? What is your fear?

Fear not, for I have redeemed you.
We deserve death. We deserve hell. We deserve separation. This great God, says that He has redeemed us. That means He has payed off our debt and made it possible for us to have life. Full life. Essentially, He has rescued us. Fear not, for I have rescued you. He has not only rescued us from death, but rescued us from our fears. What are you afraid of? God can rescue you.

I have summoned you by name. You are mine.
You're not just a number. You are not just one of 7.046 billion people in this world. You weren't just created and then forgotten. Guess what? God knows your name. This fact in itself is enough to bring great comfort. In Psalm 139:16 it says, "All the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be."He knows you. Earlier in the Psalm it says, "You have searched me, and you know me. You know when I set and when I rise; You perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; You are familiar with ALL MY WAYS. Before a word is on my tongue You know it completely, O Lord." He has searched you. He doesn't jus know the person you were the day you were born, or the day you graduated from high school, or got married, or the day you came to know Him personally. He knows you today. He knows your struggle, your dreams, your achievements. He knows the way your laugh sounds, and the number of hairs on your head. He is aware of all your habits - how late you like to sleep, how fast you drive, the way you brush you teeth, your routine throughout the day. He knows the people you want to see, He knows the things that hurt you, and the things that make you laugh. And when He says, "Fear not", He knows what He's talking about, because He knows exactly what fears you have. So then, He always knows that He can tell you not to be afraid, because He knows He can handle you life, He can handle your day, and He knows that He can rescue you. And then, at the end of verses one we see this:

You
are
mine.

You are mine.
We look after things that belong to us. If you're a parent, you look after your children. You care for them, and desire only what is best for them. God is the perfect Father, and when He says, "You are mine" we can realize that this is a promise, not only a promise that we will always belong, but a promise that we will always be cared for. That's huge.

Verse 2 then expands on the fact that we are His.
"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze."
We fear the waters. We fear the rivers. We fear the fire.
And then we see His promises: "I will be with you. The rivers will not sweep over you. You will not be burned. The flames will not set you ablaze." Do not fear. He has rescued you. He knows you. You belong to Him, and therefore He will care for you and protect you. He promises. How can we trust His promises? The answer is simple - "For I am the Lord, you God."
We don't need a deeper explanation. His word tells us that He is unchanging and faithful, so He simply reminds us that He is God, and that in itself, is enough reassurance that His promises will be kept and fulfilled.

Why does He do all this for us?

"…You are precious and honoured in my sight, and because I love you…"

You are precious to God. You have value and great worth.
He loves you.

This, dear friends, is a passage of great promises, and of great encouragement.
Do not fear.
He has rescued you.
He has called you by name.
You are His.
He has promised to protect you.
HE IS GOD.
You are precious.
You have value.
He loves you.

Next time you find yourself afraid, whatever the reason, think on this.

"Do not be afraid, for I am with you."

just call His name.

lyrics to my most recent song.. it's so cool to me how I can just sit down at the piano and God just gives me the words...He is always speaking!

Just Call His Name
October 1

come to the waters
come to the waters
come to the waters
just come.

He is waiting to hold you
He is waiting to love you
He is waiting to have you
just come.

when the valley feels too low
when the journey looks too hard
when you don't know where else you can go
just come to the waters
just come.

when you are thirsty
when you are weary
when you are broken
just come

He is there in the sorrow
He is there in the pain
He is there in the heartbreak
just call His name

when the valley feels too low
when the journey looks too hard
when you don't know where else you can go
just come to the waters
just come.

will you call on your Saviour
in the midst of your pain?
will you come to the waters?
just call His name.

what we're missing

I wish I didn't feel so...lost"

I hear things like this over and over. I have really been struck by the fact lately that we live in a world where many people are suffering and hurting, and people can't seem to find joy, and can't seem to find a purpose in life. Maybe it was just better kept quiet before, but it seems to me like in the past couple years depression has sky rocketed. More and more I hear about people suffering from depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, stress, a huge lack of confidence, etc. People are lonely, hurting, empty, scared, angry... the list goes on. I think many of us go through these things at some point, and if you are blessed enough not to, you know people who are dealing with it.
"I wish I didn't feel so lost."
I was having a conversation with my friend and she said that to me. Earlier that morning, I had been sitting at my piano playing and singing Amazing Grace, and that first verse really jumped out at me.

"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found, was blind, but now I see."

We can feel lost, and insecure, and hurt, but the truth is that we are FOUND, LOVED, REDEEMED, and so precious in the eyes of Christ! We have purpose! There is a difference between living according to out emotions, and living according to truth. I am learning so much about choice right now. Even today, as I was driving home, I found myself sinking into it: self-pity, depression, discontent. I had to consciously make a choice. "Choose Christ." I have a choice to focus on myself, and to allow myself to be consumed in my own depression and self, but I know that that is not the way I want to live, so every moment, I need to choose to focus on truth. When I am insecure about the way I look, I have to shut that voice up, and tell myself that I'm beautiful - that God thinks I'm beautiful. Sometimes it is hard to believe this, but God is faithful, and continues to work in my heart. God says, "My thoughts are not your thoughts, and neither are your ways my ways." (Isaiah 55:8) Our God is in control and has plans we know nothing about! I'm at the point in my life where I can look back and see things from a new perspective. Circumstances that once were so painful and overwhelming now seem insignificant, but as I look back on them, I realize how blessed I am that I have a God who not only knew what was best for me, but a God who gives and takes away, working all things together for my good. It's all about trusting, and choosing where to focus our thoughts. If you're reading this, you are precious and loved, and God has good plans for you! Satan will do everything he can do to discourage you, and attack, but take a minute a remind of yourself of what God has to say!
I have been so challenged this past year in what it means to place my identity solely in Christ, and to find all of my satisfaction, value, love, security, beauty, and acceptance in Him. Unless we understand who God is, we cannot understand who we are. My entire identity should be in Christ Jesus. If I am completely honest with myself, there are lies that I have believed about myself that warp the satisfaction and fulfillment I should find in Christ. For as long as I can remember, I have struggled with body-image, and with being "good-enough" for people. Lies that I have believed tell me I'm not good enough, pretty enough, funny enough, or talented enough. However, I belong to God! These worldly things are physical and temporary, plus those lies are just that - lies! Jeremiah 31:3 says, "I have loved you with an everlasting love!", and Ephesians 1:4 tells me that God chose me! Next time you feel unloved or unwanted, remember those verses! Take that lies!
My identity and purpose is given to me by Christ - not created for me by man. It doesn't matter what anyone says. It doesn't matter how many magazines taunt us with a body-image that is fake and unattainable. It doesn't matter what anyone throws at us, or how Satan tries to discourage us. The truth remains the same! We are loved. We are important. We are precious. We are chosen. We are found. We have purpose! If we believe anything other than what God has said about who we are, that's a lie, and the things we believe always affect our lives. It can be a struggle not to give in to these lies, but it's a choice to believe and walk in the the things that God says about us!

So choose life! In John 10:10 Jesus says, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life, and have it to the FULLEST." Fullness of life. This is what people are missing. So many people can't figure out a purpose for life... life has no meaning and no joy to them! This hurts me, because I know there is so much life and adventure out there, but how much more must it hurt our heavenly Father, who's purpose for sending His son to this earth was that we may have life! Fullness of life. We don't even know what that means! We only get a glimpse of it here on earth, but if we are allowing Jesus to take control of every area of our lives, we can live in complete abandon, and experience true life.

But what about discontentment? Even if we believe what God says, it can still be so easy to slip into discontent. In John 7:37-39, Jesus says, "If anyone is thirsty, let hime come to me and drink." In John 4:13 - 14, Jesus says, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will be come in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." During my past year at Bible school, we had to read "The Spiritual Secret of Hudson Taylor." I was so inspired and encouraged by Taylor's life, and by the way that he truly lived in dependance on Christ. One thing Hudson Taylor said that really struck me was this, "Can Jesus meet my need? Yes, and more than meet it...not matter how helpless I am, how hopeless I am, how deep are my soul yearnings - Jesus can meet all, all, and more than meet." Later, after Hudson Taylor's wife has died and his children have all been sent to England, we read this account from him: "Then I understood why the Lord had made [John 4:13-14] so clear to me, 'whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst.' Twenty times a day, perhaps, as I felt the heart thirst coming back, I cried to Him: 'Lord, you promised! You promised me that I should never thirst. And whether I called by day or night, how quickly He always came and satisfied my sorrowing heart! So much so, that I often wondered whether it were possible that my loved one who had been taken could be enjoying more of His presence than I was in my lonely chamber."

Taylor truly believed God's promise that He was able to satisfy every need and every thirst. I want this in my life! This had challenged me to hold onto the promise that God has give... He says that if I come to Him, I will never thirst. Thirst has to do with our desires  We desire relationship, love, acceptance, security, contentment, peace, etc. The problem is not in the desires, but with the level on which we fill them. The world will always leave us feeling empty and discontent. This is why people feel so lost, alone, depressed, and purposeless - because they are looking to fill their thirsts in the wrong places. The only one who can truly satisfy the human heart is the One who made it. Hudson Taylor called out to God saying, "I'm thirsty." We all have longings and desires. We all have hurts and insecurities. Will we allow Him to fulfill our longings, and to heal our hurts? I know it's hard. I've walked the path. Put your hope in the Lord. He has good things in store. As I read Romans 5 today, I was again reminded that we can even rejoice in the midst of suffering, because we know that He is doing good things, and that whatever valley we walk through is used to teach and mature us, and some day, we will be like Him.

My dear friend Steph posted recently saying, "Imagine if everyone really knew who they were, what they were truly worth, and were totally content and satisfied with that. I think it could change a life. It could change a street. It could change a city. It could change a nation. And I think it could change the whole world!" It seems that everywhere we look people are struggling, and unhappy. I'm not saying that it's wrong to struggle, and wrong to grieve. It's true that we live in a world of hate, violence, evil, and sin. The world is a messy place, and bad things happen. However, I know that in the midst of all of this, there is a good and loving God.

So, whoever you are, whether you know Christ or not, please take my word for it. You are beautiful, you are loved, you are valued. Your life has a purpose, and despite the valleys and the storms, there are good things in store! Fill your head with truth. Don't allow the lies to sink in. Search for Jesus, and allow Him to fill you, and allow Him so satisfy. All you need is a little faith. Yes, the storms will come, and yes they will be difficult. But you are a child of the Most High God - an all-powerful God - who is walking with you every step of the way. In the midst of suffering and hurt, choose life. Don't put yourself down. Don't compare yourself. Be content with who you are. When you're focused on yourself, you're missing out on life... and there is so much out there!

I once was lost.

But now I'm found.

Don't Settle

Whenever I am away from my computer, I can usually think of 50 things I could blog about, but then as I sit down to write, my good ideas evade me.
Anyways, one thing I do remember.
I was at work yesterday (I work at Mark's Work Wearhouse), and was working with a girl on her last shift. For Privacy's Sake I'll call her Courtney. So I was talking to Courtney, and asking her about her plans for the next year, and she said she wanted to move to a nearby city, but wasn't sure now "because the guy is kinda being a jerk." As we talk more, I learn the guy has an 8 year old daughter, and it just so happens that this guy is 38. Courtney is 22. Okay. "Age is just a number" she tells me. Maybe so, but what business does a 38 year old have dating a 22 year old? And I realize some people will disagree with this. But this is just my opinion. And as Courtney's dad told her after kicking her out of the house..."Courtney, it's your mistake to make."
I know the Lord intentionally places us in situations and conversations with people who need to hear truth and people who need to know love. I am blessed and humbled by the fact that God wants to use me to reach people's hearts. I have no idea if anything I said had an impact in Courtney's heart, but I trust that the Lord, who knows all hearts, and goes before us in all we do, will use me, even though I don't deserve it. I don't even deserve to know God or to talk to Him, but He takes me anyways. In spite of my downfalls.
I was able to tell Courtney not to settle. Not to take anything from a guy other than respect.
Honey, you deserve the BEST. DO NOT let a guy mistreat you, be rude to you, or take advantage of you. You are SO much better than that. You are above that. You still have your whole life ahead of you. Chose well. My heart hurts for you. It is way more worth it for you to be single, than to be in a relationship where you are mistreated and hurt. I am speaking to myself in this as I speak to you. In our world, men see women differently than the way God intended them to. Men take advantage. Not all men, but we need to be careful. I know you don't know God. I know you don't understand His love for you. But you are His princess. And whatever guy you end up with needs to know what it means to treat you as such. Don't take anything less. I know it's so easy to be emotionally invested. I know this. But LET GO. Courtney, you are valued and loved, and worth so much more than you believe. I hope you will learn this, and truly believe it from you heart. This is truth. <3

time to sail.

I used to blog a lot when I was younger. Okay, I'm still pretty young. I've wanted to get back into this for some time, but there are two things that stop me.
1) Do I have anything important to say?
2) Will I actually keep up with this?

I figure I can always just delete this whole thing if it doesn't work out. It wouldn't be the first blog of mine to be deleted. Anyways, I'm just a girl who loves the Lord, wants to be used by Him, and a girl who realizes how broken, and desperate I am without Him. Just a leaking vessel really. We all know that if a boat is leaking, it is useless. Useless, yet not without potential. Useless, unless someone fixes it, and refines it. Then it sails. Sails to places no one could ever guess, on a journey no one could ever plan. So here I am, a leaking vessel, but slowly and surely, the Lord is refining me, purifying me, healing me, and taking me on the journey of a lifetime. Time to sail. ♥

"Seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return to the Lord, and He will have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon. 'For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,' declares the Lord. 'For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts higher than your thoughts. For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there without watering the earth and making it bear and sprout, and furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the seater; so will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; it will not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it. For you will go out with joy and be led forth with peace; the mountains and the hills will break forth into shouts of joy before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.'" Isaiah 55:6-12 NASB

"For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you ail perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus." Philippians 1:6 NASB

Following Him is exciting stuff :)
